Destination Insights

French Polynesia is a collection of 120 islands and atolls spanning 1,200 miles in the South Pacific, brimming with treasures to explore.
Islands
Tahiti is the largest gem in the French Polynesian crown. Renowned for its crystal-clear turquoise waters, pristine white-sand beaches, and lush landscapes. Would recommend this island for those looking for a blend of relaxation and adventure.
Mo’orea, often known as Tahiti’s little sister, is a short distance away from Tahiti. With white sand beaches and lush greenery, Mo’orea stands out for its rugged, untouched charm. Would highly recommend it if you are nature enthusiasts looking for that laid back Tahitian lifestyle.
Bora Bora is a luxurious escape. Think overwater bungalow resorts above coral reefs perfectly aligned with majestic views of Mount Otemanu. Renowned for its world-class resorts and indulgent ambiance, Bora Bora is a magnet for romantic getaways and those seeking opulent relaxation amidst an adventurous, glamorous backdrop favored by celebrities.
The Marquesas Islands are a remote paradise. These islands have towering volcanic peaks, lush valleys, and a rich tapestry of ancient Polynesian traditions. For those craving off-the-beaten-path adventures, this destination offers raw grandeur and unparalleled beauty.
Rangiroa ranks among the world’s largest atolls, boasting vibrant coral reefs and a plethora of marine life. This is a haven for diving enthusiasts. Whether you’re new to the sport or a seasoned diver, this island offers an exhilarating adventure beneath the Pacific waves.
Flora & Fauna

Underwater, there are protected sanctuaries formed by the island’s atolls. While snorkeling, we swam alongside blacktip reef sharks, octopuses, moray eels, and both hawksbill and green sea turtles. We also encountered southern stingrays, like the delicate pink whipray, and a variety of colorful fish, including angelfish, butterflyfish, barracuda, clownfish, damselfish, groupers, needlefish, parrotfish, pufferfish, snappers, triggerfish, and wrasses. Among the coral, we spotted sea cucumbers, sea urchins, starfish, and crabs. Venture further into the open ocean, and there’s a chance to encounter dolphins and humpback whales during their migration season.

On land, Tahiti’s natural beauty is equally captivating. The islands are blanketed in the sweet scent of Tahitian gardenias, hibiscus, and bougainvillea, with breadfruit trees, coconut palms, and banana plants dotting the landscape. One of my favorite moments was eating fresh fruit picked straight off the trees—mango, banana, papaya, coconut, and pineapple. It’s also fun spotting green iguanas, skink lizards darting through the foliage, and birds like the Tahiti warbler and Pacific pigeon. Insider Tip: Tahiti is free from poisonous snakes and spiders, so you can fully relax during your vacation in this island paradise.
Weather
The best time to visit Tahiti depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for.
The dry season (May to October) offers pleasant weather, clear skies, and warm waters perfect for outdoor adventures, though July and August see more tourists and higher prices. We visited in July, and while there was a brief tropical rain shower here and there, it didn’t disrupt our plans, adding just a touch of the tropics.
The wet season (December to March) brings higher humidity and occasional rain, but it’s a quieter time with lower prices and fewer tourists, making it ideal for a more budget-friendly and peaceful escape.
The shoulder seasons (April and November) provide serene weather with fewer crowds and more affordable rates.
French Territory
French Polynesia is well, you guessed it, a French territory. There are some important similarities and differences to note:
Currency: The US dollar is used, which makes transactions easy for American visitors. Insider Tip: Bring cash for parking, transportation, and food, as credit cards may not always be accepted.
Driving: Cars have left-hand drive, but you drive on the left side of the road. Take your time to adjust if you’re not used to it, and always be cautious when navigating unfamiliar roads.
Plan well, respect local customs, and you’ll be sure to have a memorable trip.

Wilderness Wisdom

Tahiti’s beaches are as diverse as they are breathtaking, offering a mix of soft white sand, dramatic volcanic black sand, and even coral-lined shores. The calm lagoons are perfect for snorkeling, with crystal-clear waters teeming with marine life, from vibrant fish to gentle rays. Always check for local currents, as some beaches may have stronger undertows, especially outside the lagoon areas. Bring reef-safe sunscreen to protect Tahiti’s delicate marine ecosystems, and remember that many beaches are public, though some may require access through resorts or private land. Early mornings often bring the calmest waters and fewer crowds, making them the best time to explore this island paradise.
Beachside Ties
While vacationing in the French Polynesia, I read Something in the Water by Catherine Steadman. Picture this: a couple on their Bora Bora honeymoon, finding a bag of cash, and then everything spirals into deception and danger. This novel was the perfect beach thriller. I devoured it during my trip, and if you like reading suspense then you’ll love the added layer of mystery it brings to the paradise vibes. Happy reading!
